Madison Metro Transit operates extensive bus service throughout the city of Madison, Wisconsin and to the surrounding communities of Middleton, Fitchburg, and Verona. Systemwide, fixed route ridership was 13.4 million in 2008.[1] Metro Transit also provides supplemental transit services to Madison middle and high schools via routes 90, 91, 92 and 93, open to the general public, but designed to provide additional peak services during school starting and dismissal times. Metro serves the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus, the Eagle Heights University apartments, and some residential areas near campus via routes 80, 81, 82, 84 and 85. The "80 routes" are free of charge and also operate as the university's "SafeRide" late night service.

Metro also connects with suburban mass transit services such as the Monona Transit Authority and Portage Public Transit.

Route network

The route network focuses on hubs at the Capitol Square in downtown Madison and five transfer points in outer parts of the city. Routes are loosely numbered by part of town served. Primary routes (2, 3/7, 4, 5, 6, and 13) each serve multiple parts of the city, including downtown and the Capitol Square. Routes numbered in the 20s serve the north side, routes in the 30s serve the east side, 40s serve the south side, 50s and 60s serve the west side, and 70s serve Middleton and the far west side. Many routes service the Downtown State Street area. Dane County Regional Airport is served by Route 20. The most recent service additions went into effect August 2011 and can be found by going to Metro's website. Significant improvements include reintroduction of Route 10 from the Isthmus to the University of Wisconsin, bypassing the Square, and a new Route 59 in Fitchburg on weekends serving the Highway PD corridor and north to and from the West Transfer Point. At the North Transfer Point riders can board the Portage Public transit shuttle to downtown Portage in Columbia County.
